Gary, God Bless you and your brother for watching out for your aging parents. Having done this 4 times.. I would like to fill you in on a sad reality in the care giving business. The job is tough and the salaries are so-so to average. As a result there is a caregiver culture of ‘sticky fingers’ amongst a segment of the care givers. Yes, these are people who are licensed. Some are from agencies.
Before you hire any caregiver, please remove ALL of the valuables from their apartment–especially things like jewelry. And after you do this, take your iphone and take a photo of every item in the apt. Protect what is legally yours and your brothers’. If they steal a salt shaker, who cares. It it’s your parents gold wedding rings, that’s valuable and easy to remove. Regards, Morey Schapira
